Fiber: natural, easy, and the best thing you can do for gut health

I often see patients who don’t eat enough fibre. In fact, more than half of Canadians are not reaching anywhere close to the recommended fibre intake for a healthy gut.

Insufficient fibre intake commonly leads to:

Constipation, which is uncomfortable in itself, but can further lead to hemorrhoids and/or anal fissures

Blood from the rectum, which is concerning and leads to unnecessary worry and sleepless nights

Diverticulosis, which can lead to complications like diverticular bleeding or diverticulitis, a severe infection that requires antibiotics, a possible hospital admission and/or surgery

You can prevent all this if you eat enough fibre in your diet and drink enough water. Oftentimes, this may still not be enough, particularly if your diet is inconsistent in having enough fibre every day, so I recommend taking supplementary fibre.

Psyllium fibre as in Metamucil works great, but I recommend the powder form over the capsule or gummy forms as the powder is much more effective. Alternatively if you prefer, All-Bran Buds cereal is also a viable option that contains more psyllium fibre than other cereals.
